Why Something That Can’t Reflect Can Still Help You Reflect
A language model’s associative depth gives it a particular usefulness in reflection. It draws on many ways people have described feeling, responsibility, relationships, and change. With careful direction, it can trace connections, distinguish things that have become tangled, or give language to an aspect of experience that has been hard to express.
A second possibility lies in its stance neutrality. It has no personal stake in how your situation turns out: no relationship to defend, no need to be reassured, no preferred place in your life. That leaves room to explore different positions within an experience without having to settle on one for the sake of the exchange.
This is part of what makes the medium interesting. You can give a thought room without first managing what it means for the person hearing it. The app can contribute language through which you hear your own experience more clearly, while the meaning and consequences remain yours.
